Biography

Mike Durkee

Mike Durkee is a Rapporteur for the Atlantic Council  Strategic Advisors Group.

Mike Durkee, a retired officer of the US Senior Foreign Service, served from 1995 to 2004 as the Political Advisor and senior civilian aide to four Supreme Allied Commanders Europe.  In this capacity he was personally involved in all major developments in NATO enlargement, Balkan crisis management, cooperation with Central and Eastern European nations and Mediterranean Dialogue nations, and defense against terrorism.

During 2008 he served as Deputy to General Jones in the latter’s capacity as US Special Envoy for Middle East Regional Security. Directing small staff elements in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, he helped develop policy proposals for US support to the Annapolis peace process and to coordinate US efforts to improve security, economic development and rule of law in selected areas of the West Bank, in cooperation with former Prime Minister Blair as the Quartet Representative, the EU, UN and other donors.

In earlier Foreign Service assignments, he worked in several European and Latin American nations, including Norway, Germany, Finland, United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Ecuador, and Chile.  He speaks Norwegian, Spanish and German, and survives in French.  He was educated at Colgate (BA) and Harvard (MPA, Kennedy School).
