Biography

Chris Donnelly

After graduating from the University of Manchester in Russian Studies, Chris taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for three years before helping to establish the Soviet Studies Research Centre, which he later rose to head.  In 1989 he became Special Adviser to the NATO Secretary General, serving four Secretaries General in that position.  He joined the Defense Academy of the UK in August 2003, responsible for developing the non-technical research process.  He set up and, until April 2007, headed the Defense Academy’s Advanced Research and Assessment Group.  He is now the Senior Fellow of the Defense Academy and member of the Council's Strategic Advisors Group.  He has also (since Oct 2006) begun to work as co-Director of the newly formed Institute for Statecraft and Governance, based in Oxford.

A former officer in the Territorial Army, Chris initially specialized in the study of Soviet and Warsaw Pact defense systems.  After the fall of the Berlin Wall he was closely involved in the reform of the newly emerging democracies in Central and Eastern Europe.  For the last eight years his area of particular interest has been new security threats and responses.
Chris has written three books and many articles on Russian and Eastern European defense and security issues.
