In a provocative closed door session yesterday, National Security Advisor Jim Jones proclaimed that “NATO must be prepared to address, deny, and deter the full spectrum of threats, whether emanating from within Europe, at NATO’s boundaries, or far beyond NATO’s borders."

A January 2008 Atlantic Council report began, "Make no mistake, the international community is not winning in Afghanistan." General Jim Jones, who was chairman of both the Council and that report, tells WaPo's Bob Woodward that, "We are doing the same things well and the same things poorly."

Farewell and Congratulations to General Jones

General James L. Jones, chairman of the Atlantic Council since June 2007, will be leaving his post here to serve as Barack Obama's National Security Advisor.  Last year, in a well-publicized presentation, Jones reported to Congress on the findings of the Atlantic Council's study Saving Afghanistan: An Appeal and Plan for Urgent Action, saying, "Make no mistake, the international community is not winning in Afghanistan."  The Council hosted a farewell dinner for Jones tonight.

Atlantic Council chairman and National Security Advisor-designee Jim Jones continues to get widespread plaudits.  While Hillary Clinton is a household name and Bob Gates is an incumbent getting widespread praise for his performance, Jones is a relative unknown outside establishment circles.

Retired Marine General James Jones, Chairman of the Atlantic Council, chaired the Committee that produced this report assessing Iraq's national police force. The report's overall assessment said "the Iraqi armed forces - Army, Special Forces, Navy, and Air Force - are increasingly effective and are capable of assuming greater responsibility for the internal security of Iraq; and the Iraqi police are improving, but not at a rate sufficient to meet their essential security responsibilities.

U.S. Force Posture in Europe

On March 18, the Atlantic Council hosted a conference with senior administration officials, experts, and authoritative Europeans to assess the alternative futures for U.S. force posture in Europe. The event, generously sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton with support from L-3 Services Group, featured Dr. Janine Davidson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Plans, U.S. and European points of view in two separate panels, and Representative Jim Marshall (D-GA), Member of the House Armed Services Committee.

NATO Nuclear Policy

The Atlantic Council and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation co-hosted a panel discussion on the future of NATO Nuclear Policy, based on the recent publication of two reports from FES/SIPRI and the Atlantic Council's Strategic Advisors Group on the issue.
