Charles Gurney, United States State Department

Senior Fellow Charles Gurney is a career Foreign Service Officer on detail from the Department of State. During his 23 years as a diplomat, Charles became one of the Department's top Africa Hands, with tours of duty in South Africa, Liberia, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Charles' assignment to London from 2000-2004 provided experience in U.S.-European cooperation in developing countries, an interest he is pursuing at the Atlantic Council. Charles has also worked in the Oceans, Environment and Science Bureau as the liaison with the UN Environment Program, assisting with international negotiations on mercury, water and energy. Charles received his BA from Rhodes College in Memphis in 1981 and wrote on Soviet Foreign Policy in Africa while pursuing his MA at the University of South Carolina.
