the John A. Baker Internship Program

Can international students apply?

Yes. We welcome applications from international students. However, we are unable to sponsor visas at this time.

Can recent graduates apply?

Yes. We accept applications from recent graduates.

How long is an internship at the Council?

Start and end dates are flexible. The spring semester typically runs from January to May; the summer semester from May to August; and, the fall semester from August to December.

How far in advance may I apply? Can I re-apply if I am not accepted for my requested semester?

Candidates are welcome to apply as early as they wish and to re-apply from semester to semester. Please note that all candidates will be evaluated after the deadline for each semester; and, there is no bias for or against previous candidates. We will keep materials on file from semester to semester, if asked.

Should I indicate a preferred program on my application?

While not required, it is helpful for placement purposes. The Council does not guarantee interns placement in their program of choice.

What should the topic of my writing sample be?

Applicants are best served by any writing sample — regardless of topic — that displays strong analytical abilities, a clear, concise writing style, and the ability to make large amounts of information palatable to an audience. Remember, writing samples should not exceed the five page maximum.

Are interns required to work full-time?

For most programs, a minimum of three days per week is strongly preferred.  However, to fully benefit from the experience, we encourage students to intern full time.

Does the Council provide housing in the Washington, DC area or a transportation stipend?

No, we do not provide housing for students or a daily transportation stipend. Arrangements need to be made by the student, but we would be happy to provide suggestions of places to locate housing in the area.

Where are Council interns located?

All Council interns work in our Washington DC office. The Council does not have offices in other cities throughout the United States.

Is a list of references acceptable in place of the two letters of recommendation?

No; two letters of recommendation are expected.

Who was John A. Baker?

John Baker was the founding director of the Office of Education at the Atlantic Council. The program was named in his memory in 1994.
