An Atlantic Council Asia Programs delegation in Taiwan, December 12-16 2005 An Atlantic Council Asia Programs delegation visited Taiwan on December 12-16 2005, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation explored Taiwan’s political, economic and security situation and relations across the Taiwan Straits. The delegation was led by Franklin D. Kramer, Chairman of the Atlantic Council’s Committee on Asia and Global Security, and included: Jan Lodal, Atlantic Council President; Maj. Gen. John L. Fugh (ret.) Chairman-Elect, Committee of 100; Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch, President, The U.S.-China Education Trust; Helmut Sonnenfeldt, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institute; Ellen L. Frost, Senior Fellow Institute for International Economics and National Defense University; Banning Garrett, Director of the Asia Program at the Atlantic Council; Elizabeth Lodal, Principal, Thomas Jefferson High School; and Jonathan Adams, Assistant Director of the Asia Program at the Atlantic Council.

The delegation held a series of high-level meetings with key officials, including: President Chen Shui-bian; Vice-President and DPP Chairman, Annette Lu; Michael Kau, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Chou Yi-jen, Chairman, National Security Council; Lee Jye, Minister of Defense; Dr. Joseph Wu, Chairman, Mainland Affairs Council; and Dr. Ma Yong-jeou, Taipei City Mayor and KMT Chairman, and many other among others government officials, legislators, and senior business leaders.

The delegation also participated in workshops with senior think tank analysts and with young political, business and academic leaders hosted by the Center for Advanced Policy Studies (CAPS) and the Foundation for International and Cross-Strait Studies (FICS).

The delegation’s findings and conclusions will be published as an Atlantic Council report in the next few months.
