J. Peter Pham Writes New York Times Op-Ed on War Crimes Verdict

April 27, 2012
Highlight - Pham

In “An Incomplete Justice,” an op-ed published in today’s New York Times, J. Peter Pham, director of the Atlantic Council’s Michael S. Ansari Africa Center, discusses former Liberian president Charles Taylor’s war crimes conviction by a UN-created tribunal at The Hague.

The piece argues that while Thursday’s verdict by the Special Court for Sierra Leone is undoubtedly a milestone in the long battle against impunity for war crimes and other crimes against humanity, the process that led to the judgment also underscores the limitations of an international justice system that still fails to deliver justice to victims more quickly, fails to deliver a complete accounting, and leaves all too many war criminals unpunished, including quite a few of Taylor’s associates who are still holding public office in the Liberia they did so much to destroy.

The article was also featured in the April 27 edition of the Atlantic Wire'sFive Best Friday Columns.”
