J. Peter Pham, director of the Atlantic Council’s Michael S. Ansari Africa Center, gave a luncheon presentation today at the United States African Development Foundation (USADF) on “African Hot Spots: Current Crises, Emerging Challenges.”

At the invitation of Lloyd O. Pierson, president and CEO of USADF, Pham gave a tour d’horizon of the most significant current geopolitical challenges in Africa, including the collapse of the Somali state, the takeover of northern Mali by Islamist extremists, the ongoing conflict in and between Sudan and South Sudan, the campaign of violence by Boko Haram in Nigeria, and the continued strife in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Created by Act of Congress in 1980, USADF is an independent federal government agency whose mission is to provide direct economic development assistance to marginalized populations in conflict and post-conflict areas in Africa.
