J. Peter Pham in Ghana Press on Argentine Warship’s Continued Detention

October 22, 2012

A number of media outlets in Ghana, including the print edition of The Statesman and the news portal GhanaWeb, have published an updated adaptation of the commentary in The National Interest by J. Peter Pham, director of the Atlantic Council’s Michael S. Ansari Africa Center, on the West African country’s judiciary’s order to detain an Argentine warship on behalf of the Latin American country’s creditors.

In the updated essay, Pham notes the significance of Justice Richard Adjei Frimpong’s 25-page decision rejecting Argentina’s claims to sovereign immunity and argues that, even as they receive an Argentine delegation seeking a political solution to the standoff, President John Dramani Mahama and other Ghanaian officials should take a firm stand for judicial independence and the rule of law by respecting the court’s decision in the matter.
