J. Peter Pham Discusses Somalia, Mali (Voice of America)

November 05, 2012
Highlight - Pham

J. Peter Pham, director of the Atlantic Council’s Michael S. Ansari Africa Center, was interviewed by Carol Castiel on the evolving political and security situations in Somalia and Mali for this week’s edition of the Voice of America’s Encounter. Also taking part in the discussion was Jennifer Cooke, director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. During the half-hour segment, the two panelists discussed both the contrasts between Somalia, where al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda-linked militant group, appears to be losing ground, and Mali, where al-Qaeda’s regional affiliate and its allies seem to be consolidating their hold on the northern part of the country, and options for the United States and the international community. Also analyzed was Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s visit last week to Algeria, a potential key actor in the crisis in the Sahel.
