Bronwyn Bruton speaks at the Heritage Foundation's Africa Working Group

Bronwyn Bruton, deputy director of the Michael S. Ansari Africa Center at the Atlantic Council, was a featured speaker at today’s Heritage Foundation Africa Working Group meeting. Along with Ambassador David Shinn, adjunct professor at the George Washington University and former ambassador to Ethiopia, Bruton discussed the end of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) mandate on August 20, and whether the ‘development’ is likely to alter the security situation in the failed state. She expressed concern that the parliament’s re-election of Somalia’s current batch of leaders, under conditions of bribery and duress, would cement a perception of impunity and further undermine Somalis’ confidence in the idea of centralized governance. The speakers also discussed the future of the African Union peacekeeping mission, AMISOM, foreign political and commercial interests in the country, and the likely impact of the passing of Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on Somalia.
