From the AP: A Russian newspaper has reported that the military has begun deploying S-400 mobile surface-to-air missiles in Kaliningrad, the Baltic exclave bordered by Poland and Lithuania.

Izvestia cited unnamed military officials as saying the missiles arrived Friday, but did not say how many. The Defense Ministry declined comment on the report.

From Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty:  Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov of the Baltic Fleet told "Izvestia" in February he expected the system to be deployed to Kaliningrad in April.

The move has been seen as a response to U.S. plans to deploy a missile shield in Europe, despite objections from the Kremlin. . . .

According to Russian media, each S-400 system can "hit simultaneously 36 targets with up to 72 missiles."  (photo: Valeriy Melnikov/RIA Novosti)
