Cristian Diaconescu: Stability in the Black Sea Region

May 07, 2009
Foreign Minister of Romania Cristian Diaconescu

H.E. Cristian Diaconescu, the Foreign Minister of Romania, spoke at the Atlantic Council about the future stability of the greater Black Sea region.  The event, entitled “The Greater Black Sea Region: Winning Stability and Fostering Values," was moderated by Atlantic Council President and CEO Frederick Kempe.

The greater Black Sea region has alternately served as a barrier or corridor, no-man's land or vital buffer between empires, states and spheres on the Eurasian landmass.  In May 2009, the region finds itself riven by disputes over NATO and EU enlargement, simmering conflict zones and energy geopolitics.  Previously, Minister Diaconescu was Deputy Secretary General of the Organization for Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and chief negotiator for the treaty on the Romania-Ukraine border regime.  His talk follows the founding of the Atlantic Council’s new Eurasia Energy Center, which will jointly host the Black Sea Energy Forum with the Romanian government from September 30 to October 2, 2009.
