Council Hosts Pakistan Experts
October 22, 2008At an event hosted by the Atlantic Council, a panel of experts discussed the changes within the Pakistani government. The panel focussed on the evolving relationship between Pakistan's civilian and military government. Shuja Nawaz, author of "Crossed Swords: Pakistan, Its Army, and the Wars Within," alongside Lisa Curtis and Walter Andersen formed the panel, which was moderated by the Council's Joseph Snyder.
Throughout much of Pakistan's history the government has been dominated by the Pakistan Army. However early this year a civilian government was elected, President (and retired General) Pervez Musharraf resigned, and a civilian President, Asif Zardari was elected in his stead. Meanwhile, Pakistan has been wracked with an increasingly virulent insurgency and an economy on the brink of failure. In recent months Pakistan has suffered a major terrorist bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad and has accelerated its military efforts against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces operating in the Tribal Areas along the Afghan border. The new government is also facing pressure from the U.S. to step up its activities against terrorism. In this environment, how will the new civilian government and the military establishment work together to solve Pakistan's problems?
Panelists:
- Shuja Nawaz – Former Director at the International Atomic Energy Agency
- Lisa Curtis – Senior Fellow, The Heritage Foundation
- Walter Andersen – Associate Director of South Asia Program, John Hopkins University
Moderator:
- Joseph Snyder - Director of Asia Program, Atlantic Council of the United States
