Council Hosts General David Petraeus
October 09, 2008In a luncheon hosted at the offices of the Atlantic Council in Washington, D.C., General David Petraeus participated in an off-the-record exchange with the Strategic Advisors Group (SAG). The General, who was recently confirmed by the Senate as chief of U.S. Central Command, engaged in a frank dialogue with Council experts about the challenges faced by the U.S. and NATO in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The luncheon was co-chaired by Atlantic Council president and CEO Frederick Kempe and Lt Gen Brent Scowcroft, chairman of the Council's International Advisory Board.
Petraeus repeatedly emphasized that winning in Afghanistan will require "sustained commitment" from the United States and NATO on the military front but, far more importantly, on the diplomatic and development fronts. As hard as Iraq was and continues to be, this will be "the long theater in the Long War."
