Ashraf Ghani on Fixing Failed States
October 30, 2008Under the auspices of the Council's Young Atlanticist program, Dr Ashraf Ghani led an off-the-record roundtable entitled, 'Fixing Failed States and Securing Afghanistan's Future'. Ghani, Chairman of the Institute for State Effectiveness and former Minister of Finance of Afghanistan, discussed the challenge failed states pose to the global community. The event was hosted at the offices of the Atlantic Council and was attended by young leaders from around the world.
Fragile and failed states are a central problem facing the international community, yet we have still not figured out how best to support state functionality in these difficult places. Dr. Ghani, Chairman of the Institute for State Effectiveness and previously the first Minister of Finance in post-Taliban Afghanistan, confronted the problem of state-building in one of the most challenging contexts of the 21st century. Dr. Ghani has recently co-authored a book with Clare Lockhart, entitled "Fixing Failed States", and will share his thoughts on how best to understand problems of state fragility and offer some practical solutions for meeting the state-building challenge in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Participants:
- Dr. Ashraf Ghani - Chairman of the State Effectiveness Institute, Atlantic Council of the United States International Advisory Board
- Brooke R. Heaton - Assistant Director, Young Atlanticist Program
