Nawaz Offers Views on Changing Pakistani Perceptions of U.S.
Shuja Nawaz, Director of the Atlantic Council's South Asia Center, was interviewed on The Takeaway morning radio news program on the Pakistan flood situation. The discussion focused on the U.S. being the single largest donor of aid, and the potential for Pakistanis to shift their perceptions of America. Nawaz insists that the U.S. should stay the course with aid to Pakistan, but warns of the long-term effects of America's goodwill, stating that "changing image takes a long time."

In his new book "Poorer Richard's America: What Would Ben Say?", Atlantic Council Board member Tom Blair writes as Ben Franklin on a wide range of issues affecting America today: the national deficit, Wall Street, health care, and many others.

Wars fundamentally change militaries. For example, the bloody and muddy stalemate of World War I led defeated Germany to invest in the innovative use of armor and firepower to break that stalemate. The U.S. experience in Vietnam led to the rise of the professional and all-volunteer force that is now fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
2007 Leadership Awards: Greenspan, Schwarzman and Jones
April 30, 2007The 2007 Awards Dinner of the Atlantic Council of the United States was held on April 30, 2007 at the Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC. This year the Award for Distinguished International Leadership was presented to Alan Greenspan. The Council also presented two new awards to recognize the military and business pillars so vital to our work. General James L. Jones, the outgoing Supreme Allied Commander, was recognized with an Award for Distinguished Military Leadership, and Blackstone co-founder and chief executive Stephen A. Schwarzman received the Distinguished Business Leadership Award. Colin Powell, the recipient of the Council's 2005 award introduced the honorees.
The evening also featured a panel moderated by Brent Scowcroft [watch panel discussion] and improvisations by piano virtuosa Gabriela Montero "who plays with fingers of steel and a heart of gold" as recently described in a 60 Minutes segment "The Gift."

About the Atlantic Council Leadership Awards:
Since 1996, the Atlantic Council has selected an outstanding individual to receive its annual Award for Distinguished International Leadership. Over the years, Distinguished Military, Business, and Artistic Leadership Awards have been added. These awards reflect the Council’s mission of promoting constructive U.S. international engagement by honoring individuals who have made major contributions to U.S. foreign policy and transatlantic relations.
