Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero: U.S.-EU Strategic Partnership
February 04, 2010Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero delivered a major policy address before the Atlantic Council. His visit to Washington came at the start of Spain’s EU presidency, just as the new Treaty of Lisbon comes into force.
With transatlantic relations a priority of the Spanish presidency, Prime Minister Zapatero presented his thoughts on how the U.S. and EU can work together to address major challenges such as Iranian WMD proliferation, Afghanistan and the global financial crisis, while also developing a post-Copenhagen approach to climate change and relaunching the Middle East peace process.
National Security Advisor General James L. Jones introduced Prime Minister Zapatero, following welcoming remarks from Atlantic Council Chairman Senator Chuck Hagel. Frederick Kempe, President and CEO of the Atlantic Council, moderated the Q&A session. The discussion was part of the Global Leadership Series.
