Damon Wilson, Vice President and Director, International Security Program & Shuja Nawaz, Director, South Asia Center

A panel of military and political experts joined the Council’s South Asia Center to evaluate the implications of and global reactions to President Obama’s new Afghanistan strategy.  The event was moderated by South Asia Center director Shuja Nawaz.

After a much anticipated review, Obama decided to rapidly deploy more troops to Afghanistan, engaging other countries in the region as well as European coalition partners in tackling the insurgency in Afghanistan and the border region of Pakistan.  Experts discussed whether this new strategy will work.

Panelists:

  • Kimberly Kagan, President, Institute for the Study of War
  • LtCol Gregory Lemons, Atlantic Council Marine Corps Senior Fellow; veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq wars
