The Atlantic Council hosted a dialogue on U.S.-China Cooperation on Low-Emissions Coal Technologies in Beijing from June 24-26.

Staged in collaboration with the U.S./China Energy and Environmental Technology Center (EETC), an initiative of Tsinghua University and Tulane University, the dialogue examined the projected utilization of coal in power and industry and the pace at which new technology can be implemented.  Financing mechanisms and regulatory frameworks were also discussed.  In addition, the dialogue assessed the opportunities for undertaking joint projects in a number of areas, including coal gasification, liquefaction, CCS and geological storage.  Recommendations were identified for accelerating the pace of innovation on clean coal technologies.

This was the fourth in a series of U.S.-China Strategic Dialogues on energy security which aim to contribute to the development of active cooperation and coordination between the United States and China on vital energy issues.  The dialogues are a project of the Atlantic Council's Asia and Energy and Environment programs.

Launched in 2006, the series was organized by the Atlantic Council and the EETC with the understanding that the development of a common knowledge of each country’s energy outlook and policies is essential to a secure energy future for both parties.  The meetings have been very successful in attracting key organizations, industry experts and representatives from U.S. and Chinese government agencies to help identify concrete recommendations for increasing governmental and industry cooperation.
