The Transatlantic Bargain in 2012: Still a Good Deal?

On January 24, the Atlantic Council hosted the Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic, H.E. Alexandr Vondra. He offered a central European perspective on the future of the transatlantic partnership and the key issues facing the alliance in the run-up to the NATO Chicago Summit.
A lifelong transatlanticist, Alexandr Vondra was appointed the minister of defense of the Czech Republic on July 13, 2010. Previously, he served as deputy prime minister for European affairs and as a foreign minister of the Czech Republic.
From 1990 to 1992, Minister Vondra served as foreign policy advisor to President Vaclav Havel. In 1994, he managed the Czech team responsible for the implementation of the Czech Republic’s Partnership for Peace Program, and in 1996, he built and headed the Czech team for pre-accession talks with NATO. From March 1997 to July 2001, he served as the Czech ambassador to the United States. During his tenure, he oversaw the process of the Czech Republic’s integration into NATO.
