Private Sector Reception with the Participants of President Obama's Young African Leaders Forum
August 03, 2010The Ansari Africa Center co-sponsored a private reception to honor the participants of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Form. The reception was hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on the evening of August 3, 2010. Mr. Scott Eisner, Executive Director of the Africa Business Initiative, U.S. Chamber of Commerce gave the welcome and opening remarks. Ansari Africa Center Director, Dr. Nancy J. Walker, gave an address on behalf of the Center and the Atlantic Council. Other sponsor representatives included Ms. Kate Thompson, Deloitte Services LP and Ms. Dayna Cade, ONE. Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley, Special Representative for Global Partnerships, U.S. Department of State, gave the keynote address.
The reception was a part of President Obama’s Young Africa Leaders Forum held in Washington D.C. from August 3 - 5 with approximately 120 young leaders from more than 40 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, representing civil society and the private sector. During the forum, the young leaders met with President Obama in a town hall meeting at the White House.
This year marks 50 years of independence for 17 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. This forum sought to honor of the important historic moment in Africa by acknowledging the extraordinarily young demographic profile of the region. This forum is part of an effort by the United States government to forge strong, forward-looking partnerships with our African partners in the years ahead. Together with American counterparts and U.S. government officials, the young leaders shared their insights on key themes of youth empowerment, good governance, and economic opportunity.
