Pivotal Partnerships: The Prospects for International Defense Cooperation in an Age of Austerity

On Wednesday, February 15, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter joined the Atlantic Council for a public address and conversation on international defense cooperation. Atlantic Council president and CEO Frederick Kempe moderated the discussion.
With the unveiling of its new defense strategy, the Obama Administration made clear that international partnerships will be paramount to America’s continued success in the twenty-first century. Today, as the United States and its allies face severe resource constraints and new threats in uncertain times, the power of leveraging effective partnerships becomes more integral than ever not only to US national security, but to international security as well. Deputy Secretary Carter addressed how the United States will face the challenges and opportunities of re-engaging current allies, while looking to employ new relationships in order to meet these growing security needs.
