The Atlantic Council hosted a group from the Pugwash Conferences and the Top Level Group for a working lunch to discuss U.S. nuclear posture in Europe. The delegation, led by Des Browne, former UK State Secretary for Defence, included Jan Kavan, former Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic, and Giorgio La Malfa, Italy's former Minister of European Affairs. Also featured were Paolo Cotta-Ramusino, Jeffrey Boutwell, Martin Butcher, and Shata Shetty from Pugwash. These assembled European leaders advocated the withdrawal of U.S. nuclear weapons from Europe and participated in a lively discussion moderated by Atlantic Council Board Member and former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Walt Slocombe. Ana Palacio, former Foreign Minister of Spain, and members of the Council's Strategic Advisors Group debated the forthcoming Nuclear Posture Review, the role of NATO and the future of nuclear policy.

The report on the delegation's consultations visit around Washington, DC can be found here.

More on the Pugwash Conferences:

The purpose of the Pugwash Conferences is to bring together, from around the world, influential scholars and public figures concerned with reducing the danger of armed conflict and seeking cooperative solutions for global problems. Meeting in private as individuals, rather than as representatives of governments or institutions, Pugwash participants exchange views and explore alternative approaches to arms control and tension reduction with a combination of candor, continuity, and flexibility seldom attained in official East-West and North-South discussions and negotiations.

More on the Top Level Group:

A unique parliamentary initiative has been formed in the UK to advocate and encourage debate and discussion on multilateral nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation issues in light of the 2010 NPT Review Conference. The group is comprised of 15 British parliamentarians, nearly all of whom are former Foreign and Defence Secretaries of State along with former Chiefs of Defence staff from the last 2 decades of politics.
