The OSCE in Eurasia: Mobilizing Relationships for Enduring Challenges
July 22, 2010On July 22, the Atlantic Council hosted a joint Eurasia Task Force – Strategic Advisors Group strategy session with Ambassador Nancy McEldowney, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Ambassador McEldowney debriefed participants on the recent OSCE informal ministerial meeting in Almaty and the Obama administration’s vision for European security.
Atlantic Council Board Director Ambassador Marc Grossman chaired the lunch discussion. Attendees posed questions and offered their views on the OSCE’s conflict prevention capabilities, how the Obama administration should handle the administrative and policy challenge of possibly facing NATO, US-EU, and OSCE summits within one year, and the implications of the U.S.-Russia ‘reset’ on the functioning of the OSCE. Participants highlighted opportunities for the OSCE to cooperate with other Eurasian security organizations, its role in Afghanistan and the mechanics of intervention in the ongoing Kyrgyzstan crisis.
This discussion continues the work of the Atlantic Council Eurasia Task Force on the OSCE and its role in Central Asia, including “U.S. Interests in Central Asia,” and issue briefs including “Deciding on an OSCE Summit,” by Senator Chuck Hagel, and “Uncertain Kyrgyzstan: Rebalancing U.S. Policy,” by Task Force Directors Damon Wilson and Ambassador Ross Wilson. A similar piece by the directors, “Kyrgyzstan Sits on a Precipice,” was published in The Hill.
