Nigerian Acting President Jonathan: Governance and Accountability in Nigeria Today
April 14, 2010On April 14, the Atlantic Council formally launched the Michael S. Ansari Africa Center with a public address by His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan, Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In his first visit to the United States since becoming Acting President in February, Dr. Jonathan discussed his priorities of promoting good governance in the areas of power, economy, security, infrastructure, social sector, the electoral process, and the fight against corruption.
Mr. Michael S. Ansari, whose vision enabled the creation of the Ansari Africa Center, was present. Atlantic Council Chairman Senator Chuck Hagel introduced Dr. Jonathan.

H.E. Goodluck Jonathan:
H.E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria since February 9, 2010. He had served as Vice-President since May 29, 2007 and was voted to his present position by the National Assembly due to President Umaru Yar’Adua’s illness. His tenure as Vice President was distinguished by his strong efforts in negotiating peace with militant groups in the Niger Delta. Before taking up the vice presidency, Acting President Jonathan served as Governor of Bayelsa State (2005-2007) and as Deputy Governor (1999- 2005). He is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).
