Moving the Transatlantic Partnership Beyond the Prague Agenda
May 25, 2010On May 25, the Atlantic Council hosted a discussion with Senator Alexandr Vondra who addressed the growing role of the Czech Republic and Central Europe in transatlantic relations and outlined his views on advancing a more strategic U.S.-European partnership.
Last month, the Obama administration took its biggest step yet in ‘resetting’ relations with Russia by signing the START treaty in Prague. At the same time, the United States has sought to reassure allies in Central Europe about its commitment to strengthen security in the region and to cooperate with the region on broader goals in the transatlantic agenda. Senator Vondra will provide his view on how to move U.S.-European relations beyond the Prague agenda, to work constructively on other key priorities, including affirming the role of NATO in the 21st century, promoting energy security in the region, and cooperating in the Balkans and on initiatives such as the Eastern Partnership to complete a Europe whole and free.
More on Senator Vondra:
A champion of strong transatlantic ties, Senator Vondra was the Czech Ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2001. From 2001 to 2003, Senator Vondra was the Czech Government Commissioner responsible for the preparation of the 2002 NATO Summit in Prague. In 2003, Senator Vondra served as Deputy Foreign Minister, and he returned to government to serve as Foreign Minister from 2006- 2007. From 2007-2009, he was Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs. A former foreign policy advisor to President Václav Havel, Senator Vondra was co-founder of the Civic Forum during the Velvet Revolution.
