General William "Kip" Ward, Commander of United States Africa Command, joined the Atlantic Council to discuss present and future challenges to peace and security on the African continent.  He offered his perspective on current U.S. security efforts in Africa as well as on how the U.S. can work with friends and allies on missions in Africa ranging from capacity building to humanitarian relief.

General Ward is the first commander of the recently established Africa Command, a combatant command with a unique set of challenges and missions and with an innovative approach to inter-agency collaboration.  His remarks were part of the Atlantic Council's Commanders Series, a lecture series of high-level U.S. and European military leaders hosted by the Council's International Security Program.

He is an infantry officer who has commanded at all levels of the U.S. Army.  His overseas tours include Korea, Egypt, Somalia, Israel, Germany and Bosnia.  Before taking up his current command, General Ward was the Deputy Commander of the United States European Command.  He also served as the United States Security Coordinator, Israel-Palestinian Authority in 2005.
