General Jean-Louis Georgelin: France in NATO

September 10, 2009
General Jean-Louis Georgelin, Chief of Defense of France

French Chief of Defense General Jean-Louis Georgelin joined the Atlantic Council for a discussion on France's normalization of relations with NATO.  It was the first major speech in the U.S. by a senior French official on NATO since France's reintegration into the alliance's integrated military command.

General Georgelin shared his thoughts about France's current and future role in NATO and offered his perspective on the outlook for the transatlantic defense and security relationship.  His address to the Council came one day after a French general becomes a NATO Strategic Commander for the first time in alliance history and assumes command of NATO's Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, VA.  General Georgelin is an infantry officer who has commanded at all levels of the French Army.  He has served as the Chief of the Military Staff of the President of the Republic and became the Chief of Defense in October 2006.

Atlantic Council President and CEO Fred Kempe moderated this event.  General Georgelin's remarks were part of the Atlantic Council's Commanders Series, a lecture series of high-level U.S. and European military leaders hosted by the Council's International Security Program.
