EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy: Regulating Financial Markets in Crisis

June 01, 2009
Charlie McCreevy at the Atlantic Council

Charlie McCreevy, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, joined the Atlantic Council to discuss his central role in shaping the European response to the global economic crisis.  His remarks, entitled “Regulating Financial Markets in Crisis: A Transatlantic Challenge," and the Q&A session that followed were particularly important in light of the European Commission’s recent proposals for new financial regulations.

With the financial system under continued pressure and economies continuing to contract, few issues are as urgent or controversial as how best to strengthen financial regulation and coordinate policies across the global banking system.  As Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, Charlie McCreevy has a crucial role in overseeing the European financial system, regulations governing the banking system and the development of a single market in financial services throughout the EU.  As the United States and Europe discuss options to better regulate their banking systems, a key challenge will be to avoid protectionist instincts and reconcile domestic pressures with the need to preserve global financial flows.

Charlie McCreevy and Fred Kempe

McCreevy's speech was part of the Mapping the Economic and Financial Future Series, a lecture series featuring high-level business leaders and economic policymakers from the U.S. and Europe hosted by the Atlantic Council’s Global Business and Economics ProgramFrederick Kempe, president and CEO of the Atlantic Council, moderated the discussion.  An introduction was provided by Francis J. Kelly, a member of the Atlantic Council Board of Directors and the Managing Director and Head of Government Affairs of Deutsche Bank.
