Discussion on a Realistic and Balanced U.S. Electric Power Generation Portfolio

May 26, 2010
US Energy from Space

On May 26, the Energy and Environment Program at the Atlantic Council hosted a conference call to release the report Developing a Realistic and Balanced United States Electric Power Portfolio.  The call featured General Richard Lawson, Vice-Chairman of the Atlantic Council, and the Honorable David Garman, Former Under Secretary of Energy who is currently with Decker Garman Sullivan and Associates, LLC.  General Lawson and the Honorable Mr. Garman facilitated a frank and lively dialogue that covered a diverse array of energy topics, including siting and transmission issues, energy efficiency measures, and non-Federal avenues for low-carbon energy.  The call was attended by experts from industry, non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, and government, including NATO and associated embassies.

The report Developing a Realistic and Balanced United States Electric Power Portfolio details the conclusions of a one-day workshop held in Washington D.C. on October 26, 2009, and proposes a new U.S. strategy to meet future electricity demands.  Recommendations from the report include initiating energy efficiency measures, increased utilization of low-carbon fuels such as natural gas, affordable renewables, and nuclear power, and significantly increasing RD&D on clean coal, nuclear power, renewables and transportation fuel options.
