China and the Economic Crisis
July 17, 2009Expert China economist Albert Keidel joined the Atlantic Council's Asia Program on to present China’s 2009 second quarter economic results and their implications for the upcoming U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue. Economist Pieter Bottelier, Senior Adjunct Professor at the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and former head of the World Bank Mission in China, also shared his thoughts on the China's latest data. Banning Garrett, director of the Asia Program, moderated the discussion.

Albert Keidel is an independent researcher with over 25 years' experience analyzing China's economy. Earlier in the decade he was acting Director and Deputy Director of the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of East Asian Nations after first serving briefly as Treasury's China desk officer. Keidel currently teaches a graduate course on China's economy at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute. His recent article, “China and the Economic Crisis,” is available at here.
Pieter Bottelier is a Senior Adjunct Professor of China Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. Holder of various World Bank positions, including: Senior Adviser to the Vice President for East Asia, Chief of the Resident Mission in Beijing, Director for Latin America, Director for North Africa, Division Chief for Mexico, Resident Chief Economist in Jakarta, and Desk Economist for African countries.
