Ansari Africa Center, discusses the likelihood of war between South Sudan and Sudan as well as the growing conflict within Sudan between the Arab Islamist center and its black Muslim periphery.

Britain's Security Challenges in the Age of Austerity
January 06, 2011On January 6, the Atlantic Council hosted a public address by and conversation with Sir David Richards, the UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff. He discussed the future of British forces and British defense strategy in the context of the age of austerity, future challenges, and the recently released Strategic Defense and Security Review. Atlantic Council President and CEO Frederick Kempe moderated the discussion.
An artillery officer by trade, Sir David has commanded army units at all levels in the UK, Germany, and the far east, as well as Northern Ireland. He has also commanded the UK’s contingents in international operations in East Timor and Sierra Leone. From 2006 to 2007 Sir David served as the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. In addition to his commands, he has also served in important staff functions, including as Director of Army Plans, and as the Chief of Staff of the Berlin Infantry Brigade. He took up his current duties as the UK’s most senior military officer in November 2010.
