Harxhi at ACUS

On March 3, the Council hosted an off-the-record roundtable entitled “Albania in the Western Balkans: Promoting Security and Democracy as a NATO ally,” with Edith Harxhi, Albania’s Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of regional affairs. An expert on Kosovo and the region, Harxhi served as Albania’s Special Envoy for recognizing Kosovo’s independence. Working under the UN in Kosovo, Harxhi led efforts to establish Kosovo’s Office for Public Safety and draft Kosovo’s Gender Equality Law. Speaking just days after representing Albania at the UN Human Rights Council, Harxhi highlighted Albania’s efforts to support Kosovo’s newly formed government and to alleviate tensions with officials in Belgrade. She also expressed concerns about neighbouring Macedonia, where tensions have grown between the government and the Albanian minority. The event brought together policy experts on the Western Balkans, as well as U.S. and embassy officials.
