The Atlantic Council's South Asia Center hosted a discussion with Staffan de Mistura, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Frederick Kempe, Atlantic Council President and CEO, moderated. Although recent headlines have been focused on changes in the American military leadership in Afghanistan, a wide range of international actors, including the United Nations, are working daily to improve conditions and to end the conflict. As an experienced United Nations official who has contributed efforts to resolving conflicts on several continents, SRSG de Mistura offers many insights into the path ahead for the international community in Afghanistan.

Staffan de Mistura is the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). He possesses more than three decades of experience with the United Nations in conflict-affected areas including Somalia, the Middle East, the Balkans, Nepal, and Afghanistan. He served mostly recently as the World Food Programme's (WFP) Deputy Executive Director for External Relations and was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) from 2007 to 2009.
