Russia Warns Ukraine over Western Aspirations
Peter Cassata | September 11, 2008The Russian ambassador to the UK, Yuri Fedotov, was quoted in the Independent stating, "The expansion of NATO is seen in Russia as a hostile action." He said that Russia would take defensive measures were Ukraine to become a NATO member, sparking fear that NATO expansion to the country could set off a conflict worse than the recent one in Georgia. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko's ruling coalition dissolved last week due to disagreements over the Georgia conflict. Moreover, Russia announced plans to double Ukraine's natural gas prices in January 2009. Although NATO membership for Ukraine may be set back after the events in Georgia, disputes over the renewal of Russia's lease of a naval base in the Crimea for its Black Sea Fleet may still prove to escalate tensions.
