NATO Heads Gather in Georgia
Peter Cassata | September 15, 2008On Monday, NATO heads led by Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will meet in Tbilisi to show support for the Georgian government. The NATO-Georgia Commission will convene for the first time to discuss the prospects for future Georgian membership in the alliance, but analysts expect disagreements within NATO over expansion to persist, Reuters reported.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Monday as well.
The Danish Foreign Minister said Sunday it was "unrealistic" that 200 EU peace monitors would be ready by the October 1 deadline set in the Russia-Georgia ceasefire agreement. De Hoop Scheffer has called the deal "unacceptable" for being too lenient on Russia, the Financial Times noted.
