Australian Prime Minister Announces Military Build-up

Joseph Snyder | September 11, 2008

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced in a speech to veterans on Wednesday that Australia would beef up its military capabilities.  Rudd, a Mandarin-speaking former diplomat, noted that for the first time in several hundred years there will be in the Asia-Pacific region “powers other than Anglo-Saxon powers who will be the dominant players in the world.”  Rudd focused especially on improving Australia’s naval and air power:  “We need an enhanced naval capability that can protect our sea lanes of communication and support our land forces as they deploy, and we need an air force that can fill support and combat roles and can deter, defeat and provide assistance to land and maritime forces.”
