The mission of the Atlantic Council is to renew the transatlantic community for 21st century global challenges.

The South Asia Center is the Council’s focal point on work related to the greater South Asia region, including the subcontinent, Afghanistan, Central Asia and the Gulf.   The Center seeks to foster partnerships with key institutions in the region to establish iself as a forum for dialogue between decision makers in South Asia, the U.S. and NATO. These deliberations cover internal and external security, governance, trade, economic development, education and other issues. The Center is committed to working within the region itself, rather than in Washington alone, to ensure greater local ownership of results.

About the South Asia Center Internship Program:

Interns for the South Asia Center at the Atlantic Council are vital contributors to the program’s fast-paced activities. 

The Program conducts research and project activities on topics related to the Center, and help organize a number of events, which include public speeches by senior U.S. and international policy makers; off-the-record briefings, dinners and strategy sessions with senior U.S. and international policy and officials; research and writing for publications, issue briefs; drafting proposals for fundraising efforts, and other associated activities.

The program seeks well-organized, highly reliable, motivated candidates who thrive in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate initiative.

The position is currently non-paid, but candidates gain valuable skills, experience, knowledge, and contacts in the Washington, DC policy community.

Interns for the South Asia Center provide important research and logistical support to assist these efforts and support program staff. Interns work closely with the Program Director and Associate Director. Interns are also encouraged to pursue their own research projects and to write and publish their own policy briefs or blog posts.

Duties are not limited to, but will include:

  • Conduct research to support the activities of the Center. 
  • Produce the daily South Asia News brief.
  • Publish the monthly South Asia Center Newsletter. 
  • Manage program contacts and knowledge.
  • Draft correspondence and take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
  • Handle logistical issues for program events and activities.
  • Help draft policy briefs and other Center publications.   

Qualifications

  • Must be at least a college junior in good standing or a recent graduate.
  • Must demonstrate proven interest in international affairs and the South Asia region.
  • Must work well with others and interact professionally with senior figures.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), or equivalent if degree received from a non-U.S. institution.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Technical skills in data management and analysis strongly preferred.
