The endowment was established in 1990 to promote the Council’s long-term viability and its commitment to the advancement of U.S. global interests.

Currently, the Endowment is composed of eight funds:
Achilles Education Fund — established in 1990 in honor of the late Theodore C. Achilles by his family, in support of the Council’s education program.
John A. Baker Fund — established in honor of the late John A. Baker to promote the development of international understanding among students and young leaders worldwide.
W. Tapley Bennett, Jr. Fund — honors the life, work and vision of Ambassador Tapley Bennett through support of the Council’s work with NATO and the Atlantic Treaty Association.
William H.G. FitzGerald Fund — formed in 1991 by William H.G. FitzGerald and his peers on the Board, the fund continues to grow through donations from its founder, directors, councillors and other friends of the Council.
Ford Special Fund — established in 1994 to assist the planning, research, and design phases of new projects.
Andrew J. Goodpaster Fund — gives permanent recognition to General Goodpaster’s stature in national security and education.
John E. Gray Fund — established in 1998 with a bequest from John Gray’s estate to further the Council’s work on energy and the environment.
John J. McCloy Fund — created in 1991 by Chase Manhattan Bank to help strengthen U.S. relations with the nations of Europe.
