The Rt. Hon. Lord Robertson of Port Ellen 

Rt Hon Lord (George) Robertson of Port Ellen KT GCMG Hon FRSE PC is non-executive Chairman, Cable & Wireless International. He also holds a number of non-executive positions including Deputy Chairman of the Board of TNK-BP, Director of the Weir Group plc and Director of Western Ferries (Clyde) Ltd. He is Senior Counselor with The Cohen Group of Washington DC and an advisor to Engelfield Capital. He is Joint President of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Joint President of the UK/Russia Round Table, Chairman of the John Smith Memorial Trust and a member of Her Majesty’s Privy Council.

He served as Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) from 1999 to 2003 and was Defence Secretary of the UK from 1997 to 1999. Lord Robertson held a number of official positions in Opposition between 1979 and 1997. He was elected to the House of Commons (Labour, Hamilton) in 1978. He was re-elected five times and on his appointment to NATO was elevated to the House of Lords.

He was appointed by the Queen in 2004 as one of the sixteen Knights of the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s oldest and highest honour. He was awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003, an award only rarely made to foreign citizens. He has eleven honorary doctorates.
